Pomeranian Lovers, what do you know about Pomeranian Dog Standard?. A breed standard is the objective measurement to the appearance and the temperament of dogs. Basically, the standard for any breed is a definition of the perfect dog after it’s being compared among all specimens of the breed.

The breed standards are changing from time to time. It can be known through the review by the National breed club for each dog. It is a wise thing to do to keep up with developments in a breed by checking the publications of the national kennel club.

For example, below is the American Kennel Club standard for the Pomeranian.

General Appearance of Pomeranian Dogs

The Dog Pomeranian appearance is a Cobby, balanced, short-couple dog. They look intelligent and alert in character and deportment.

Pomeranian Dog Size
For the exhibition standard, the Pomeranian’s weight is from 3 to 7 pounds. The ideal size for show specimens is 4 to 5 pounds

Pomeranian Proportion
The appearance is a Cobby, balanced and short-coupled. The legs are of medium length in proportion to a well balanced frame

Substance
The Pomeranian has a well-ribbed and rounded body. The brisket is fairly deep and not too wide.

Pomeranian Head

The Pomeranian dogs expression is like a fox. The head is well proportioned to the body and wedged-shaped. The eyes is almond shaped in medium size, dark in color but bright and not set too wide apart nor close together. Pigmentation around eye rims must be black, except self-colored in brown and blue. The ears are small and erect. It is mounted high on the head and not placed too far apart.

Skull is not domed in outline. The one with a round domey skull is a major fault. The Pomeranian’s muzzle has a pronounced stop with a rather fine but snippy muzzle.

Pigment around lips must be black, except self-colored in brown and blue.

The teeth forms a scissors bite,in which part of the inner surface of the upper teeth meets and engages part of the outer surface of the lower teeth. An undershot mouth is a major fault. However, one tooth out of line doesn’t mean an undershot or overshot mouth.

Neck, Top line, Body of Pomeranian Dog
The neck is rather short, based firmly on the shoulders. The Pomeranian dogs top line is level. The body is Cobby, well-ribbed and rounded. The brisket is fairly deep and not too wide.
The tail is one of the characteristic of the breed. It turns over the back and is carried flat and set high.

Pomeranian Forequarters
Pomeranian’s shoulder is not straight, but has sufficient lay back to hold the neck proudly and high.

The forelegs are parallel and straight. They are in medium length in proportion to a well balanced frame.

The Pomeranian stands well up on toes.
Down in pasterns is a serous fault.
Dewclaws on the forelegs can be removed.

Pomeranian Hindquarters
The middle joint of Pomeranian’s back leg are perpendicular to the ground, parallel to each other up to heel, and turning straight.

Dewclaws on the hind legs are generally removed.

Pomeranian Coat
Pomeranian has double-coated body in which the undercoat is short, soft and thick, while the outer coat consists of guard hairs that is hars, coarse and longer to give the proper texture that looks standing-off straight hair. The one with a soft, flat or open coat is a major fault.

The tail coat is covered with hair.
The front legs are well feathered from the top of the rump to the hocks.

Trimming Pomeranian Dog
Trimming for neatness is allowed in some parts of Pomeranian’s body, such as around the feet and up the back of the legs to the first joint. It is also allowed to trim unruly hairs on the edges of the cars and around the anus.

Over trimming that is beyond the location and amount described in the breed standard is heavily penalized.

Pomeranian Color
The color classifications at specialty shows maybe divided into open black, brown and blue and open any other allowed color. Any other allowed color that are acceptable to be judged on an equal basis: any solid color with sable or black shadings, party-color, sable, black and tan.

To be more specific, black and tan is black with tan or rust, sharply defined, appearing above each eye and on the muzzle, throat, fore chest, on all legs and feet and below the tail. While party-color is white with any other color distributed in even patches on the body and a white blaze on the head.

For a note, a white chest, foot, or leg on a whole colored dog (except white) is a major fault.

Gait (the way of walking)
The Pomeranian moves in a smooth, free, but not loose action. It doesn’t elbow out in front, nor move excessively wide nor cow-hocked behind.

Pomeranian Temperament
The Pomeranian shows great intelligence in its expression and is alert in character and deportment.
